How to Prevent Ghosting Effects During Dye Sublimation Printing
Ghosting is a common failure in the impresión por sublimación de tinta process. As you progress toward becoming a professional printer, you may face obstacles such as blurry transfers, dull colors, or faded images. This comprehensive guide outlines the best solutions to eliminate ghost images and improve your sublimation transfer rate.
Solutions for Flat Heat Press Machines
1. Manage Moisture in Cushion Materials:
Cushion materials (cotton cloth, sponge, cardboard) can absorb ink moisture, causing excessive water vapor and “aerosol” streaks on fabric.
Solution: Evaporate moisture from the pad before starting the transfer and replace cushion materials regularly.
2. Control Storage Humidity:
Damp fabric or papel de sublimación becomes soft and wrinkled, leading to stripes and low transfer rates.
Important: Store materials in a dry room with humidity controlled below 60%.
3. Prevent Secondary Transfer Ghosting:
Ghosting occurs when paper is sucked up by the upper plate and falls back onto the hot fabric. To avoid this:
- Reduce Ascent Speed: Adjust the cylinder throttle valve to slow down the pressure plate’s lifting speed.
- The Four-Corner Dip: Apply a tiny dot of water (≤0.5 cm²) to the corners of the paper to temporarily bond it to the fabric.
- Cover-up Method: Use paper larger than the fabric to block electrostatic effects.
- Use Adhesive (Tacky) Transfer Paper: This is the best way to prevent ghosting. Tacky paper sticks to the fabric, eliminating any chance of shifting or misalignment during production.
Troubleshooting Rotary Heat Press (Rotary Calender)
1. Horizontal/Lateral Ghosting
Fixed shallow shadows appearing on the left/right sides of dots or lines.
- Axial Displacement: Caused by worn thrust bearings or loose fine-tuning mechanisms. Fix: Regular maintenance and timely bearing replacement.
- Axial Transfer Error: Resulting from inaccurate squeegee movement. Fix: Adjust the gap between the roller gripper shaft rings.
- Ruffled Paper: “Lotus leaf” edges cause random folding. Fix: Air-dry the paper for better flatness before printing.
2. Vertical/Longitudinal Ghosting
Shadows appearing in front or back of the printed dots in the axial direction.
- Felt Blanket Reset Failure: Occurs when roller pressure is too high or the radius is improperly configured. Fix: Reduce printing pressure and synchronize roller speeds.
- Loose Blanket Tension: Large displacement during rolling. Fix: Re-tighten the blanket or check for skewed cutting/improper installation.
- Plate Dislocation: Caused by loose or cracked printing plates. Fix: Tighten or replace the plate immediately.
3. Irregular Ghosting
Caused by insufficient installation accuracy of double-diameter rollers or worn tooth pads. Maintaining the machine in peak condition is essential for high-quality mass production.
